Example data table
These examples use kg, m³, and kg/m³ for display.
| Sample | Moist mass (kg) | Mold volume (m³) | Moisture (%) | Wet density (kg/m³) | Dry density (kg/m³) | Relative compaction (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example A | 4.250 | 0.002125 | 11.50 | 2000.000 | 1793.722 | 96.98 (MDD 1849) |
| Example B | 4.120 | 0.002125 | 9.80 | 1938.824 | 1765.049 | 95.44 (MDD 1849) |
| Example C | 4.300 | 0.002125 | 13.20 | 2023.529 | 1787.124 | 96.63 (MDD 1849) |

Formula used
Wet density
ρwet = m / Vm is the moist soil mass in the mold, and V is mold volume.
Dry density
ρdry = ρwet / (1 + w)w is moisture content as a decimal (e.g., 11.5% → 0.115).
Unit weight
γ = ρwet · gDisplayed in kN/m³ using g = 9.80665 m/s².
Relative compaction
RC(%) = (ρdry / MDD) · 100MDD is the maximum dry density from your lab compaction curve.
