Concrete over steel decking needs more than flat slab math. The deck ribs hold extra concrete. That hidden fill changes volume, weight, and delivery cost. This calculator treats the slab as two parts. The first part is the topping above the deck. The second part is the concrete inside each flute.
Why Deck Geometry Matters
A metal deck profile is often trapezoidal. The top flute width, bottom flute width, depth, and spacing define the filled area. The tool converts that flute area into an equivalent flat thickness. Then it adds the topping thickness. The result is the average concrete depth across the floor.
Planning Material and Loads
The calculated area starts with length times width. Openings can be deducted. Waste is then added to the concrete volume. This helps account for pump loss, uneven placement, small overages, and finishing tolerance. The load result helps estimate wet or hardened slab weight. It also combines deck weight, reinforcing load, and added loads. This is useful for planning, but it is not a stamped design.
Useful Job Checks
Use realistic deck dimensions from the manufacturer. Do not guess rib geometry on critical work. Check whether the slab is normal weight or lightweight concrete. Density changes the load strongly. Add a waste factor that matches project conditions. Small decks may need more waste. Large uniform pours may need less.
Export and Review
After calculation, review average thickness, volume, weight, dead load, cost, and ordering quantity. Export the result as CSV for spreadsheets. Use the PDF option for a simple job record. Keep the results with drawings, deck data sheets, and supplier quotes.
Ordering Tips
Round order volume carefully. Ready mix trucks use practical batch sizes. Ask suppliers about minimum loads. Confirm slump, strength, air content, and fiber needs before booking. Record the assumed density and deck profile. Clear records reduce disputes and rework later. They also help quantity checks during closeout review.
