Accurately estimating cooling loads is an essential step in designing energy-efficient, comfortable, and reliable heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for commercial and residential buildings. The Cooling Load Temperature Difference (CLTD), Cooling Load Factor (CLF), and Solar Cooling Load (SCL) method is a traditional, highly regarded engineering approach defined by ASHRAE. It simplifies complex heat transfer equations into convenient tabular factors, making it easier for HVAC engineers to determine peak thermal loads.
The total cooling load is composed of both sensible and latent heat gains originating from external and internal sources. External loads account for heat transmitted through roofs, exterior walls, and glass surfaces due to solar radiation and ambient temperature differentials. Internal loads evaluate heat generated by occupants, interior lighting systems, office equipment, and air infiltration.
For structural walls and roofs, the calculation multiplies the surface area by the thermal transmittance (U-factor) and the adjusted CLTD value. For fenestration, solar heat gain is computed using specialized SCL parameters corresponding to orientation, time of day, and month. Internal gains are moderated via Cooling Load Factors (CLF) to account for thermal storage effects within building mass before translating into immediate cooling requirements.
