Formula Used

Usable length = room length - 2 x perimeter gap.

Usable width = room width - 2 x perimeter gap.

Usable area = usable length x usable width.

Tile module length = tile length + grout width.

Tile module area = module length x module width.

Base tiles = usable area / module area.

Diagonal factor = absolute value of sin(2 x pattern angle).

Cut allowance = perimeter / square root(module area) x 0.18 x diagonal factor x complexity factor.

Final tiles = ceiling((base tiles + cut allowance) x (1 + waste percent / 100)).

Boxes = ceiling(final tiles / tiles per box). Coverage rounding is also checked.

Why diagonal layouts need extra care

The tile module is the tile plus one grout joint. A twelve inch tile with a one eighth inch joint does not repeat every twelve inches. It repeats every twelve and one eighth inches. The calculator converts those values to feet. Then it divides usable floor area by module area. This gives the base tile count before diagonal cuts and waste.

Waste, boxes, and budget

Waste protects the job from broken pieces, pattern matching, wrong cuts, and future repairs. A diagonal floor often needs more waste than a straight floor.
