Tip: Enter your inputs, then press Calculate. Results will appear here above the form.
Use openings and waste to reflect real job conditions.

Project inputs

Walls area = 2 x (L + W) x H.
Openings are deducted from wall area only.
Typical range: 8 to 15 percent.
Door area = count x width x height.
Window area = count x width x height.
Use this when openings are irregular.
Tip: Deduct only wall openings, not ceiling fixtures.
Enter your local material cost.
Type adjusts board cost with a multiplier.
Common: 1/2 walls, 5/8 ceilings.
Higher levels increase labor and finishing.
Corner bead uses 4 corners x height, plus 10 percent waste.
Labor hours = (area with waste / productivity) x finish multiplier.
Total = direct + overhead + profit + tax.

Example data table

Scenario Room (ft) Height (ft) Surfaces Openings (sqft) Waste Sheet size Sheets Estimated total
Bedroom patch-and-replace 12x10 8 Walls + ceiling 66 10% 4x8 14 Varies by local rates
Bathroom moisture board 8x6 8 Walls only 21 12% 4x8 6 Varies by local rates
Garage fire-rated ceiling 20x20 9 Ceiling only 0 8% 4x12 9 Varies by local rates
Run the calculator with these inputs to generate your own totals.

Formula used

  • Wall area (sqft) = 2 x (Length + Width) x Height
  • Ceiling area (sqft) = Length x Width
  • Gross area (sqft) = selected surfaces (walls, ceiling, or both)
  • Openings deduction (sqft) = doors + windows, or custom openings
  • Net area (sqft) = max(Gross - Openings, 0)
  • Area with waste (sqft) = Net x (1 + Waste%/100)
  • Sheets = ceil(Area with waste / Sheet area)
  • Labor hours = (Area with waste / Productivity) x Finish multiplier (+ demo time)
  • Direct subtotal = Materials + Labor + optional Demo/Disposal/Paint
  • Grand total = Direct + Overhead + Profit + Tax

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter room length, width, height, and surfaces to replace.
  2. Deduct openings using doors/windows or a custom openings total.
  3. Set waste, sheet size, type, thickness, and finish level.
  4. Enter labor rate and productivity, then select add-on options.
  5. Apply overhead, profit, and tax, then press Calculate.
  6. Download CSV or PDF to share the estimate.
Note: This estimator supports planning and bidding. Field conditions, framing, and local code can change quantities and labor.
