Formula Used

This calculator uses the common capacity method for sizing means of egress:

Required Clear Width = Occupant Load × Capacity Factor

A design margin (if entered) increases the result by a percentage.

IBC-style factors (commonly summarized): stairways often use 0.30 in/occupant, while other components use 0.20 in/occupant. Reduced factors are often permitted when the building is sprinklered and equipped with an emergency voice/alarm system, excluding certain occupancy groups.
NFPA-style simplified option: many occupancies use 0.20 in/occupant, while special cases (e.g., high-hazard or non-sprinklered healthcare) can require larger factors. This option is intentionally simplified.

Stairway factors are commonly shown as 0.30 and 0.20 in/occupant depending on systems and occupancy limitations.
