Flare Radiation Calculator

Model point‑source radiation using practical field inputs. See heat flux and safe setbacks instantly today. Download concise outputs for permits, audits, and briefings easily.

Calculator Inputs

Use realistic factors from vendor data, studies, or project assumptions.

If you only have fuel rate, convert to heat release rate first.
Often ranges roughly 0.15–0.35 for many flames.
Use lower values for fog, dust, or humid conditions.
Accounts for shielding, orientation, and geometry.
Distance from flame center to receptor.
Used to back-calculate a setback distance.
Comma or space separated. The primary distance is always included.

Formula Used

This tool applies a point‑source radiation model to estimate heat flux at a receptor.

q = (HRR × χr × τ × VF) / (4πR²)
  • q = heat flux at the receptor (kW/m²)
  • HRR = heat release rate (kW)
  • χr = radiant fraction (0–1)
  • τ = atmospheric transmissivity (0–1)
  • VF = view factor / geometric factor (0–1)
  • R = distance from source to receptor (m)

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter heat release rate in MW or kW.
  2. Set radiant fraction, transmissivity, and view factor.
  3. Enter a primary distance to evaluate heat flux.
  4. Provide an allowable heat flux to estimate setback distance.
  5. Optionally add multiple distances for a quick comparison table.
  6. Press Submit to show results below the header.
  7. Export CSV or PDF for documentation and sharing.
