Joist Count Calculator

Plan joist layouts with confidence, fewer surprises, and clearer material orders today. Compare spacing, rim boards, openings, waste, and costs in seconds easily anywhere.

Estimate joist quantities fast for decks, floors, and framing. Adjust spacing, offsets, openings, waste, and doubled ends. Export CSV or PDF for accurate project planning.

Calculator

Choose units before entering dimensions.
Clear spacing adds joist thickness to get O.C.
Typical framing allowance: 5–10%.
Used only when spacing entry is “clear”.
Leave 0 for joists tight to edges.
Used only when spacing entry is “clear”.
Leave 0 for joists tight to edges.
Examples: stair openings, heavy posts, large cutouts.
Typical: 2 for doubling on both sides.
$ / joist
$ / length
Use one pricing method; per-length includes rim length.

Example data table

Project Span length Width across joists Spacing (O.C.) Openings Waste Estimated main joists
Deck A 12 ft 16 ft 16 in 0 5% 13
Floor B 14 ft 18 ft 12 in 1 8% 20
Patio C 3.6 m 4.8 m 400 mm 0 7% 14

Example counts are illustrative. Field conditions and codes may require additional framing.

Formula used

The calculator converts dimensions to a consistent internal unit and computes joists across the width:

  • On-center spacing: distance between joist centerlines.
  • Clear spacing: clear gap between joist faces; converted to on-center by adding thickness.
  • Effective width: Weff = W − 2·offset
  • Spaces count: Nspaces = ceil(Weff / Soc)
  • Main joists (baseline): Njoists = Nspaces + 1
  • Extras: doubled ends add 2; openings add openings × extra.
  • Waste: Nfinal = ceil(N × (1 + waste%/100))
  • Total linear length: L = Nfinal × span

Always verify framing layouts against local requirements and engineered drawings.

How to use this calculator

  1. Select your unit system, then enter span length and width across joists.
  2. Choose on-center or clear spacing and enter the spacing value.
  3. Optional: set edge offsets, openings, doubled ends, rim boards, and waste.
  4. Press Calculate to show results above the form.
  5. Use the download buttons to export the calculated results.

Accurate joist counts reduce waste and speed framing decisions.
