All quantities use volt-amperes. Percentages are converted to decimals during the calculation.

General connected load

General VA = (Floor area × lighting rate) + (small-appliance circuits × VA each) + (laundry circuits × VA each)

Standard planning method

General demand = min(General VA, first tier) × first-tier factor + max(General VA − first tier, 0) × remainder factor
Fixed appliance demand = Fixed appliance VA × group factor, only when the enabled threshold is reached

Optional planning method

Non-HVAC base = General VA + fixed appliances + dryer + cooking demand + adjusted EV + additional load
Optional demand = min(Base, first tier) × first-tier factor + max(Base − first tier, 0) × remainder factor

Final service estimate

Calculated demand = Selected non-HVAC demand + larger of heating or cooling + motor adder

Understanding Residential Demand

A single-family load calculation estimates electrical demand on the service. It combines lighting, required circuits, fixed equipment, cooking loads, dryers, heating, cooling, and vehicle charging. Connected load differs from calculated service demand. Most loads do not operate together. Demand factors represent this diversity. The resulting figure helps compare planned demand with a service rating. It also supports early decisions for panels, feeders, conductors, utility coordination, and future expansion. Treat the worksheet as a planning record.

Build the General Household Load

Start with the dwelling floor area. Multiply it by the selected volt-ampere rate. Add the assigned values for small-appliance circuits and laundry circuits. Keep these inputs separate before demand adjustments. Clear inputs make reviews easier. They show whether the estimate changed because of size, circuit quantity, or the chosen factor. Use measured floor area when possible. Exclude detached structures unless their loads share the same service. Check renovation areas carefully because additions can change the general calculation significantly.

Use nameplate watts or volt-amperes whenever available. Include permanently connected appliances, water heating, pumps, dryers, cooking equipment, and extra loads. Enter a calculated cooking demand where local rules require a table value. Heating and cooling are usually noncoincident. The calculator uses the larger entered value. This prevents adding full heating and cooling demand together. Confirm unusual equipment with manufacturer data. Record all assumptions. The standard planning method applies demand first to general household loads. It can reduce qualifying fixed appliances when enough units are installed. The optional planning method combines non-HVAC loads. It then applies configurable first-tier and remainder percentages. Both methods are screening tools in this page. Adopted codes and permit worksheets can differ. Keep the selected method with the project notes. A qualified electrical professional must verify final service, feeder, conductor, and protection choices before work begins.

2. Why is connected load higher than demand?

Connected load lists all entered equipment. Demand methods reduce certain groups because many household devices are not expected to operate at the same time.

3. Which floor area should I enter?

Enter the area assigned to the dwelling service calculation. Confirm whether additions, attached spaces, or detached structures belong in the same calculation.

4. Should cooking equipment use nameplate VA?

Use the calculated cooking demand required by your selected method. A nameplate value may not match the demand value used for service planning.

5. Why does the calculator use only one HVAC value?

Heating and cooling commonly operate as noncoincident loads. This worksheet includes the larger entered value. Verify exceptions or supplemental equipment separately.

6. How is EV charging treated?

The calculator multiplies the entered EV load by the selected continuous-load factor. Confirm the factor and load-treatment rules with the adopted local requirements.

7. What is the largest motor adder?

Some design methods add a percentage of the largest motor already included in the load. Enter it once, then enable the adder only when required.

8. When can the fixed-appliance group factor apply?

It can apply after the selected number of qualifying fixed appliances is reached. The calculator exposes both the threshold and percentage for review.

9. Does the suggested service rating select conductors?

No. It only identifies the next listed service rating above the design current. Conductors, terminations, protection, and equipment ratings need separate verification.

10. Can I use the result for a permit?

Use it as a working worksheet. A qualified professional should check the local permit form, adopted rules, equipment data, and all project-specific conditions.

11. Why add a design margin?

A margin helps assess modest future changes, such as another appliance or charging equipment. It does not replace the demand calculation required for final approval.
