Mold Growth Likelihood Calculator

Predict dampness impacts before damage spreads quickly. Tune airflow, insulation, and cleanup schedules with confidence. Choose safer finishes using practical site measurements every time.

Inputs

Enter indoor conditions and surface data from your site walk.
Use the same unit for both temperatures.
Provide a valid temperature.
Measure the coldest wall, corner, or glazing.
Provide a valid surface temperature.
Humidity must be 1–100%.
Typical dwellings: 0.2–1.0 ACH.
Enter 0–10 ACH.
How long RH stays elevated each day.
Enter 0–24 hours.
Includes flooding, pipe leaks, or persistent seepage.
Tip: If you only have air temperature and RH, measure the coldest surface with an IR thermometer.

Example Data Table

Air Temp (C) RH (%) Surface Temp (C) ACH Material Score Category
2455200.7Standard38Moderate
2670180.3Susceptible78High
2245211.2Resistant18Low
2080160.2Susceptible92Severe

Scores are illustrative and depend on exposure duration, moisture sources, and building details.

Formula Used

The calculator estimates dew point using a Magnus-type approximation, then derives surface relative humidity from the same vapor pressure at the colder surface.

  • Dew point (C): computed from air temperature and indoor RH (Magnus approximation).
  • Actual vapor pressure: e = RH · es(Tair)
  • Surface RH (%): RHs = 100 · e / es(Tsurface) (capped at 100%).
  • Likelihood score: a weighted index that increases with high Surface RH, long exposure, susceptible materials, recent wetting, and low ventilation.

This is a screening tool for construction decisions, not a lab diagnosis. For visible growth or persistent odors, follow your local remediation guidance.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure indoor air temperature and indoor relative humidity.
  2. Find the coldest surface (corners, glazing, behind furniture).
  3. Estimate ventilation (ACH) from design data or commissioning notes.
  4. Select moisture level, material susceptibility, and wet-event history.
  5. Press Calculate Likelihood to view score and drivers.
  6. Download CSV or PDF to attach to inspection reports.
