Preheat Temperature Calculator

Dial in preheat targets for reliable welds across structural materials. Enter chemistry and thickness, then compare options and export reports. For crews on site.

Inputs

Use plate thickness or effective joint thickness.
Cold conditions may raise the minimum preheat.
Typical range: 0.5 to 2.5 kJ/mm.
Used only as a minor adjustment.
Higher hydrogen generally increases preheat demand.
Higher restraint can increase cracking risk.

Steel chemistry (weight percent)

If you do not have full chemistry, enter what you know and keep the rest at zero.

Formula used

1) Carbon equivalent (IIW):

CE = C + (Mn/6) + (Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15

2) Preheat estimate (guidance model):

T_target(degC) = 50 + 400*max(0, CE - 0.30) + 0.50*t(mm) + adjustments

  • Adjustments include hydrogen, restraint, process, ambient, and heat input effects.
  • Output is bounded to typical planning ranges (50C to 350C).
  • Use project requirements, WPS, and governing codes for final decisions.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the joint or plate thickness and select units.
  2. Add ambient temperature and estimated heat input.
  3. Choose process, hydrogen level, and restraint level.
  4. Enter steel chemistry values from mill test reports.
  5. Press Calculate to view minimum, target, and maximum preheat.
  6. Export CSV or PDF for job records and planning notes.
