Plan safer rolling runs with speed outputs. Include slip, reduction, and throughput for decisions fast. Download tables to share with your project team instantly.

Inputs
Units are in millimeters, meters, minutes, and kilograms unless noted.
Choose based on available site data.
Use working diameter at the pass.
From drive setpoint or tachometer.
Typical 0-5% for quick estimates.
Needed for Volume Continuity mode.
Used for throughput estimates.
For reduction and continuity calculations.
For reduction, continuity, and throughput.
Steel is commonly 7,850 kg/m³.
Advanced options
Applied to effective throughput only.
Provides approximate rolling time.
Quick checks
  • Verify diameter after wear and regrinding.
  • Keep thickness units consistent across measurements.
  • Slip varies with friction, reduction, and temperature.
Note: This tool provides engineering estimates. Confirm with mill instrumentation, pass schedule, and safety procedures.
Example Data Table
Sample values to demonstrate typical outputs.
Roll Ø (mm) RPM Slip (%) Exit thk (mm) Width (mm) Exit speed (m/min) Throughput (t/hr)
650 90 2.0 6.0 1200 187.8 636.1
520 110 1.5 3.2 950 184.1 261.0
400 140 3.0 1.8 700 181.2 134.5
Throughput in the examples assumes density 7,850 kg/m³ and uses the slip-based exit speed.
Formula Used

1) Roll surface speed
Surface speed is based on roll circumference and rotational speed:

  • Circumference (m) = π × D, where D is roll diameter in meters.
  • Vsurface (m/min) = Circumference × RPM

2) Exit speed methods

  • Surface + Slip: Vexit ≈ Vsurface × (1 + Slip%)
  • Volume Continuity: assuming width is constant and material is incompressible:
    Vexit = Ventry × (hentry / hexit)
  • Hybrid: slip estimate adjusted by thickness ratio (when provided).

3) Throughput (requires width and exit thickness):

  • Cross-section: A = (Width × Thickness) in m².
  • Volumetric flow: Q = A × Vexit (m³/min).
  • Mass flow: ṁ = ρ × Q (kg/min).
  • Tonnes per hour: t/hr = (ṁ × 60) / 1000
How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter roll diameter and RPM from your mill settings.
  2. Select a calculation mode that matches your available measurements.
  3. For quick estimates, keep Slip at 1-3% unless site data suggests otherwise.
  4. To estimate throughput, add strip width and exit thickness.
  5. Optional: enter coil length to estimate rolling time.
  6. Press Calculate to display results above this form.
  7. Use Download CSV or Download PDF to archive results.
