Advanced Roof Builder Calculator

Design gable roof layouts using clear building inputs. Review ridge, coverage, and purchase totals instantly. Plan smarter roofs with organized numbers, charts, and exports.

Roof Builder Inputs

This estimator supports gable, shed, and flat roof planning in one page.

Choose the roof type for the geometry rules.
Main length measured along the ridge or eave line.
Overall building width before adding overhangs.
Applied to both length and width edges.
Example for 6:12 pitch, enter 6.
Example for 6:12 pitch, enter 12.
Adds extra area for cutting and layout losses.
Used to estimate framing count per plane.
A 4×8 panel is commonly 32 square feet.
Typical asphalt bundle coverage is near 33.3 square feet.
Enter the usable coverage from one roll.

Plotly Roof Profile Graph

The chart uses the current page values. For gable roofs, it shows a centered ridge profile.

Example Data Table

Roof Type Building Size Overhang Pitch Total Area Material Area Bundles
Gable 40 ft × 28 ft 1 ft 6:12 1408.72 sq ft 1549.60 sq ft 47
Shed 30 ft × 18 ft 0.5 ft 4:12 620.86 sq ft 670.53 sq ft 21
Flat 24 ft × 20 ft 0.5 ft 0:12 525.00 sq ft 551.25 sq ft 17

Formula Used

Adjusted Length
Adjusted Length = Building Length + (2 × Overhang)
Adjusted Span
Adjusted Span = Building Width + (2 × Overhang)
Pitch Ratio
Pitch Ratio = Pitch Rise ÷ Pitch Run
Gable Roof Rise and Rafter
Rise = (Adjusted Span ÷ 2) × Pitch Ratio
Rafter Length = √[(Adjusted Span ÷ 2)² + Rise²]
Shed Roof Rise and Rafter
Rise = Adjusted Span × Pitch Ratio
Rafter Length = √[(Adjusted Span)² + Rise²]
Flat Roof Plane Length
Rafter Length = Adjusted Span
Total Roof Area
Total Roof Area = One Plane Area × Number of Planes
Material Area with Waste
Material Area = Total Roof Area × (1 + Waste Factor ÷ 100)
Material Counts
Sheathing Panels = Ceiling(Material Area ÷ Panel Coverage)
Shingle Bundles = Ceiling(Material Area ÷ Bundle Coverage)
Underlayment Rolls = Ceiling(Material Area ÷ Roll Coverage)

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select the roof style that matches your project.
  2. Enter building length and width in feet.
  3. Add the overhang for each side.
  4. Enter pitch rise and run for sloped roofs.
  5. Set waste allowance, rafter spacing, and coverage values.
  6. Click Build Roof Estimate to place results above the form.
  7. Review the chart, summary cards, and detailed table.
  8. Use the CSV and PDF buttons to export the finished estimate.

FAQs

1) What roof types does this calculator support?

It supports gable, shed, and flat roofs. Gable uses two planes, shed uses one sloped plane, and flat uses one horizontal plane for quick estimating.

2) Does the area include overhangs?

Yes. The calculator adds overhangs to both the building length and width before estimating roof dimensions, area, edge lengths, and materials.

3) Why is waste factor important?

Waste covers cutting loss, breakage, layout trimming, and minor site errors. Adding waste helps ordering stay realistic and reduces the chance of running short.

4) How are rafters counted?

Rafters are estimated from adjusted roof length and chosen spacing. The calculator returns a practical quantity for planning, not a stamped structural design.

5) Can I use metric units?

This version is arranged in feet, inches, and square feet. You can still use metric values after converting inputs and coverage numbers consistently.

6) What does roof squares mean?

A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof coverage. Contractors often price shingles and underlayment planning from square counts.

7) Is this enough for permit drawings?

No. This tool is for estimating and planning. Final construction documents should still be checked by a qualified designer, engineer, or contractor.

8) Can I export the estimate?

Yes. After calculation, use the built-in CSV or PDF buttons to save the summary values and share them with clients, teams, or suppliers.
