Two-tile patterns combine two tile sizes, colors, or finishes in one repeat. They make ordinary floors and walls feel deliberate. A small contrasting tile can frame a larger field tile. Equal tiles can form a checkerboard. Different sizes can create rhythm. Good planning prevents uneven cuts, unexpected shortages, and costly last-minute purchases.

Choose a Repeat That Fits

Start by defining one complete repeat. Count every Tile A and Tile B piece inside that repeat. A checkerboard often uses one piece of each tile. A blended pattern may use two large tiles and one accent tile. The calculator uses those counts with each tile face area. This creates a practical module coverage estimate for the selected field.

Measure the Finished Surface

Measure the longest and widest finished dimensions. Use inside measurements for floors, walls, counters, and patios. Convert fractions carefully. Keep all room dimensions in feet and tile dimensions in inches. Do not subtract permanent items unless tile will not run under them. Enter a border width only when the perimeter will use a separate band of tile.

Allow for Cuts and Waste

Waste covers cuts, breakage, shade selection, future repairs, and layout changes. Simple square rooms may need ten percent. Diagonal layouts, many corners, or patterned borders can need fifteen percent or more. Order extra material from the same production lot when possible. Matching stock later can be difficult. Waste is added after the field and border estimates are calculated.

Read the Results Carefully

The result separates the center field from the optional border. It shows required module repeats, base pieces, purchase pieces, coverage, and material cost. The module side is an equivalent square measurement, not a literal pattern dimension. Use it to compare repeat sizes. Check that each pattern can physically align before installation. Dry-lay several repeats and confirm the visual balance near walls.

Practical Installation Notes

Set a reference line before spreading adhesive. Keep joints consistent with spacers. Mix tiles from several boxes to reduce color clustering. Place cut pieces at less visible edges when the design allows. Confirm the substrate is flat and clean. This calculator supports ordering decisions, not structural or waterproofing design. Follow tile, adhesive, grout, and local building requirements for the specific installation. For shower walls, include niches, windows, and transition strips as separate measured areas. Use about ten percent for simple rooms. Use twelve to fifteen percent for many cuts, diagonal lines, patterns, or borders. Complex rooms may need more. Keep extra material for repairs and color matching.

Does a border change the calculation?

Yes. The border is removed from the center field, then estimated separately with the selected border tile. Choose Tile A or Tile B for the perimeter band and enter its finished width.

Can it estimate wall installations?

Yes. Use the finished wall dimensions in feet. Measure every tiled section separately when walls include windows, doors, niches, or large openings. Add their areas only when tile will cover them.

Are box quantities included?

Yes, when you enter pieces per box. The calculator rounds each tile type up to whole boxes. Check the manufacturer label because coverage and piece counts can vary by product and country.

Does the calculator verify exact tile fit?

No. It estimates quantities from area and repeat counts. It cannot account for every alignment issue, movement joint, threshold, drain, or unusual cut. Make a scaled drawing or dry layout before installation.

Should I buy extra for future repairs?

Yes. Keep unopened boxes in a dry, labeled place. Future batches may vary in shade, calibration, or texture. Extra stock makes isolated repair work much easier years after the first installation.

What measurements should I confirm before ordering?

Confirm finished surface dimensions, tile face size, intended joint, module counts, border width, trim details, and box coverage. Recheck every measurement after substrate preparation because finished dimensions can change.
