Example Data Table

Length Width Sections Layers Deductions Waste % Overlap % Roll Coverage Price Per Roll Rolls Needed Total Cost
120 30 1 1 60 10 5 400 25 10 250

This example uses square feet and a single roof section. Change the unit label if your project uses square meters.

Formula Used

Gross Area = Length × Width × Number of Sections

Net Area = Gross Area − Deductions

Installed Area = Net Area × Number of Layers

Adjusted Area = Installed Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)

Effective Coverage Per Roll = Roll Coverage × (1 − Overlap % ÷ 100)

Rolls Needed = Ceiling(Adjusted Area ÷ Effective Coverage Per Roll)

Total Material Cost = Rolls Needed × Price Per Roll

Keep deductions, roll coverage, and surface dimensions in the same unit system for accurate results.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the main surface length and width.
  2. Add the number of equal sections in the project.
  3. Enter how many underlayment layers the assembly needs.
  4. Subtract skylights, shafts, or other openings as deductions.
  5. Add waste allowance for cutting and layout losses.
  6. Add overlap loss to reduce effective roll coverage.
  7. Enter the manufacturer roll coverage and price per roll.
  8. Click calculate to view total area, roll count, graph, and cost.

FAQs

1. What does this calculator estimate?

It estimates gross area, deductions, installed area, adjusted area, effective roll coverage, rolls needed, surplus coverage, and total material cost for underlayment planning.

2. Should I enter roof area or section dimensions?

Enter one representative section length and width plus the number of equal sections. If sections differ, run the calculator separately for each group or enter a carefully combined value.

3. How is waste applied?

Waste is added after deductions and layers. It covers trimming, starter pieces, mistakes, edge losses, and small layout inefficiencies that happen during installation.

4. What does overlap loss mean?

Overlap loss reduces usable coverage per roll. A higher overlap percentage means each roll covers less finished area, so the project will require more rolls.

5. Can I use square meters?

Yes. Keep every area input and roll coverage value in the same unit system. Change the unit label field so the result table matches your documents.

6. Why do I need a layers input?

Some assemblies need more than one layer. The layers field converts surface area into installed underlayment area before waste is added.

7. Does the cost include labor and accessories?

No. The cost result only multiplies rolls by the entered unit price. Add labor, fasteners, tape, flashing, and taxes separately if needed.

8. Why are rolls rounded up?

Rolls are purchased as whole units. The calculator rounds up because partial rolls cannot be ordered for normal material delivery and site planning.
