2. Why does actual board width matter?

Actual width controls the number of board rows. Nominal lumber names do not equal finished dimensions. Measure the product or use the manufacturer specification.

3. What waste percentage should I enter?

Ten percent is a useful starting point for simple rectangular decks. Use a higher allowance for diagonal boards, picture framing, curves, many openings, or selective board matching.

4. Are joists counted at both deck edges?

Yes. The formula adds one joist after dividing the deck length by the entered spacing. This provides an edge member at each side in the estimate.

5. Can I use the beam estimate for permit drawings?

No. The beam quantities are preliminary. Beam locations, sizes, plies, and connections must be selected using approved span tables, engineering, and local requirements.

6. How are concrete bags calculated?

The calculator finds total cylindrical footing volume, then divides it by your bag yield. Use the bag manufacturer yield because mixes and bag weights vary.

7. Does the railing estimate include every hardware item?

No. It estimates rail length, posts, and balusters. Add brackets, screws, blocking, post anchors, caps, gates, and other system-specific parts separately.

8. Why are rail lengths doubled?

The calculator estimates one top rail and one bottom rail. Their combined material length equals twice the railing run. Some systems require additional rails.

9. Can this calculator handle irregular deck shapes?

For irregular shapes, divide the deck into rectangles. Calculate each section separately. Combine the results, then add extra material for transitions, corners, and cutting waste.

10. Should I buy extra deck boards?

Yes. Extra matching boards help with defects, cuts, future repairs, and color continuity. Store spare boards flat and protected from sun and moisture.

11. Does this estimate include ledger flashing or connectors?
