How the estimate is calculated
Weight conversion: kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237
BMI: weight in kilograms ÷ height in meters²
Maximum pulse option one: 220 − age
Maximum pulse option two: 208 − (0.7 × age)
Heart-rate reserve: maximum pulse − resting pulse
Target zone: resting pulse + [intensity × heart-rate reserve]
The percentage-of-maximum option instead multiplies maximum pulse by the selected intensity. Weight does not receive a direct multiplier because body weight alone cannot reliably predict an individual exercise pulse.

Weight, pulse, and exercise planning
Understanding the Estimate
Weight does not translate into one exact heart rate. Heart rate changes with age, fitness, medication, hydration, temperature, sleep, stress, and exercise intensity. This calculator uses weight and height to create BMI context. It uses age, resting pulse, and effort level to estimate a training range. That approach gives a more useful result than a weight-only conversion.
Two people with the same age and weight can often have different pulse responses.
Why Weight Still Matters
Weight can affect the effort required for walking, climbing, cycling, and running. A heavier body may require more energy during the same movement. Yet it does not create a dependable direct heart-rate multiplier. The calculator therefore keeps weight separate from the target-zone equation.
BMI provides a simple screening measure. It compares weight with height. It cannot measure body fat directly. It also cannot explain muscle mass, body shape, or medical history. Treat the displayed BMI category as general context. Do not use it alone to judge fitness or health.
The calculator converts pounds to kilograms and inches to centimeters when needed.
Reading Your Training Zone
The maximum heart-rate estimate begins with an age-based formula. You may select the 220 minus age estimate or the 208 minus 0.7 times age estimate. Neither formula is a personal medical test. Both are population estimates.
The heart-rate-reserve method uses your resting pulse. It finds the gap between estimated maximum pulse and resting pulse. It applies your lower and upper effort percentages to that gap. Finally, it adds your resting pulse back. This often feels more personal than using a percentage of maximum pulse alone.
Moderate effort commonly uses a lower zone. Vigorous work uses a higher zone. Start conservatively when you are new to exercise. Increase effort gradually. A talk test can also help. During moderate work, speaking short sentences is usually possible. During hard work, speaking becomes difficult.
Using Results During Exercise
Check your pulse after a steady period of activity. Wrist devices can be helpful, but they may lag during fast changes. Compare your observed pulse with the selected zone. Use comfort, breathing, and recovery as additional signals.
The optional duration field estimates total heartbeats at the middle of your zone. It is not a calorie estimate. It does not measure workload, distance, or cardiovascular fitness. Use it only as a simple session summary.
Safety and Better Decisions
Stop exercise and seek urgent care for chest pressure, fainting, severe shortness of breath, or a concerning irregular heartbeat. Ask a qualified clinician before starting intense training when you have heart disease, symptoms, pregnancy-related concerns, or medications that change heart rate. Beta blockers are one example.
Repeat the calculation as your age, resting pulse, or goals change. Record your resting pulse under similar conditions. Trends over several weeks can be more useful than one number. Use this estimate as a starting point for safer activity.

What zone is usually moderate exercise?
Moderate activity is often described near 50% to 70% of estimated maximum pulse. This calculator also offers a 60% to 70% heart-rate-reserve preset for a more focused training range.

What should I do when my current pulse is above range?
Reduce pace and check how you feel. Heat, hills, dehydration, anxiety, and device error can raise readings. Stop and seek medical care for chest symptoms, fainting, or severe breathlessness.
Can medications change my exercise heart rate?
Yes. Some medicines, including certain beta blockers, can alter pulse response. Ask your prescriber which intensity measure is appropriate before using a standard target-heart-rate zone.
Are wrist heart-rate devices always accurate?
No. They can be useful, but movement, fit, sweat, and fast intensity changes may affect readings. Recheck unusual results manually or with a chest strap when appropriate.
