Example Data Table
Use these examples to test common decimal conversion formats.
| Input | Type | Decimal | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3/8 | Fraction | 0.375 | Divide numerator by denominator. |
| 2 1/4 | Mixed number | 2.25 | Add whole value and fraction. |
| 12.5% | Percent | 0.125 | Divide percent by 100. |
| 3:4 | Ratio | 0.75 | Divide left value by right value. |
| 0.1(6) | Repeating decimal | 0.166666... | Repeat the bracketed digit group. |
Formula Used
Fraction: decimal = numerator ÷ denominator.
Mixed number: decimal = whole number ± numerator ÷ denominator. The sign follows the whole number.
Percent: decimal = percent ÷ 100.
Ratio: decimal = first value ÷ second value.
Repeating decimal: decimal = fixed part + repeat ÷ [10nonrepeat digits × (10repeat digits - 1)].
Scientific notation: decimal = coefficient × 10exponent.

About the Change to a Decimal Calculator
A decimal makes many values easier to compare. Fractions, mixed numbers, ratios, percents, and repeating values can look different. They may still describe the same size. This calculator turns them into a clear decimal answer. It also shows the method, so the result is easier to trust.
Why decimal conversion matters
Decimals are common in reports, invoices, science, education, and online forms. A fraction like 3/8 may be useful in class. A decimal like 0.375 is often easier in a spreadsheet. Percent values are also easier after conversion. For example, 12.5% becomes 0.125 when written as a decimal factor.
Advanced input support
The tool accepts a single entry or many entries at once. You can choose a fixed input type or let the calculator detect it. It supports signs, spaces, mixed numbers, ratio notation, scientific notation, and repeating decimals written with parentheses like 0.1(6). Bulk mode helps when you need a table of results for several values.
Readable results
The precision option controls rounding. You can keep trailing zeroes for uniform reports. You can also remove them for a cleaner answer. Each output includes the detected type, the decimal value, and a short conversion step. This is useful for checking homework, preparing tables, or explaining work to a client.
Quality checks
The calculator checks for empty entries and zero denominators. It warns you when a value cannot be read. This prevents silent mistakes. Negative values are handled by sign rules. Ratios are divided from left to right. Mixed numbers keep the sign on the whole value, so results stay consistent.
Exports and examples
After calculation, the result appears above the form. You can download a CSV file for spreadsheet use. You can also download a PDF summary for sharing. The example table shows common formats and their decimal forms. It can help users enter data correctly before running a real conversion.
Practical tips
Use enough decimal places for the task. Finance may need two or four places. Engineering may need more. Repeating decimals can be rounded, but the step keeps the repeating method visible. Always review rounded results before using them in reports.
FAQs
What does this calculator convert?
It converts fractions, mixed numbers, percentages, ratios, repeating decimals, scientific notation, and ordinary numbers into decimal form.
Can I convert many values at once?
Yes. Enter one value per line. The calculator will process each line and show a separate result row.
How do I enter a repeating decimal?
Put the repeating digits inside parentheses. For example, enter 0.(3) for 0.333 repeated or 0.1(6) for 0.1666 repeated.
What happens with a zero denominator?
The calculator marks the entry for review. Division by zero is undefined, so no decimal result is returned.
Can it handle negative values?
Yes. Negative fractions, mixed numbers, percentages, ratios, and scientific notation are supported when written in a clear format.
Why is my result rounded?
The decimal places option controls display rounding. Increase the value to show more digits in the final answer.
Does CSV export include the steps?
Yes. The CSV file includes input, detected type, decimal result, status, and the conversion step.
Is auto detect always best?
Auto detect works for most clear entries. Choose a fixed type when your data uses one format and needs strict reading.
