Formula Used

Projected sick leave hours = current sick leave hours + extra minutes ÷ 60 + remaining pay periods × accrual per period − planned use.

Sick leave retirement days are found from the 2,087 hour work year and 360 day retirement year chart method.

Service days = years × 360 + months × 30 + days.

Final annuity service = full months after actual service and sick leave credit are added. Odd days are dropped.

Regular CSRS annuity factor = 1.5% for the first 5 years, 1.75% for the next 5 years, and 2% after 10 years.

Estimated annual annuity = high-three salary × regular CSRS annuity factor.

What This Calculator Does

A CSRS sick leave conversion calculator turns unused sick leave hours into retirement service credit. It helps federal employees estimate extra years, months, and days. It also combines that credit with current service. Then it shows the final service used after odd days are removed.

Why Sick Leave Credit Matters

Unused sick leave can raise a CSRS annuity. It does not create retirement eligibility. It also does not change the high-three average salary. Its main value is added service time for the pension formula. Even one extra full month can improve the final factor.

How Conversion Works

The calculator uses a 2,087 hour work year. It treats a retirement year as twelve equal months. Each month contains thirty retirement days. The hourly balance is rounded through the chart method. If a value falls between chart values, the next higher chart value is used. That approach avoids understating service credit.

Service And Annuity Planning

Enter actual creditable service first. Add years, months, and days. Then enter sick leave hours, projected accrual, and planned use. The calculator estimates total sick leave at retirement. It converts that balance into service credit. Next, it adds the credit to actual service. Full years and full months remain for the annuity estimate. Remaining odd days are displayed separately.

Using The Advanced Options

The high-three salary field is optional. When supplied, the calculator estimates a regular CSRS annual annuity. The formula uses graduated percentage rates. It applies one rate to the first five years. It applies another rate to the next five years. It applies the highest regular rate after ten years. This estimate is for planning only.

Reading The Result

The result panel appears below the header and above the form. It shows projected leave, converted credit, final service, dropped days, factor, annual estimate, and monthly estimate. The steps section explains each stage in order. Use the CSV button for spreadsheet records. Use the PDF button for a report.

Important Reminder

Official retirement processing can include special rules. Part time service, redeposit issues, deposits, offsets, and agency records can affect the final annuity. Treat this calculator as a planning aid. Confirm final numbers with your agency benefits office before retirement decisions.

FAQs

What does this calculator convert?

It converts unused CSRS sick leave hours into added retirement service credit. The result shows years, months, and days before odd days are dropped for annuity computation.

Does sick leave help me become eligible to retire?

No. Sick leave credit is normally used for annuity computation only. It does not help meet minimum age or service eligibility requirements.

Why does the calculator use 2,087 hours?

A federal work year is treated as 2,087 hours for this conversion. The calculator uses that value with a 360 day retirement year.

Why are odd days dropped?

CSRS annuity computation uses full years and full months. After actual service and sick leave credit are combined, leftover odd days are not counted in the estimate.

Can I include future sick leave accrual?

Yes. Enter the remaining pay periods and accrual per period. The calculator adds that projected accrual before converting the sick leave balance.

What is the high-three salary field for?

It estimates the annual and monthly annuity impact. Leave it blank or zero if you only need the sick leave service conversion.

Can part time service affect the final result?

Yes. Part time service and special retirement records can affect official processing. Use this calculator for planning, then confirm figures with your agency.

What do the export buttons do?

The CSV button downloads a spreadsheet friendly result file. The PDF button downloads a simple printable report with the main calculation values.
