Why Inch Readings Matter
Gas stations often use stick readings to check underground tanks. The reading shows the fuel depth in inches. That depth is not the same as gallons. A tank can be round, flat, long, short, level, or slightly tilted. Because of that, one inch near the bottom may hold fewer gallons than one inch near the middle. This calculator helps turn a depth reading into a usable gallon estimate.
Tank Shape and Volume
A horizontal cylinder is common at fuel stations. Its volume changes in a curved way as the liquid rises. The calculator uses the circular segment formula for this shape. A vertical cylinder is simpler. It uses the area of the round base times the liquid height. A rectangular tank uses length, width, and liquid height. A chart mode is also included. Water and Offset Adjustments
Fuel tanks can contain water at the bottom. Operators may measure the water level with paste. The calculator subtracts the water volume from the gross tank volume. It also accepts a gauge offset. This helps when the stick point is not exactly at the tank bottom. A correction percentage can be used for calibration differences, tank chart updates, or known measurement bias.
Capacity and Ullage
The tool estimates capacity from dimensions or from the chart rate. It then finds the fill percent. Ullage is the empty space still available in the tank. This value is useful before a delivery. CSV and PDF exports help save daily readings. The CSV file is useful for spreadsheets. The PDF file is useful for printed shift logs. Example rows can be compared with actual site data. This helps train staff and detect unusual readings. Repeated measurements also reveal slow leaks, sudden gains, delivery errors, or meter problems.
Accuracy Notes
This calculator gives an estimate. Real fuel volume can change with temperature, tank tilt, bottom shape, fittings, and calibration history. Underground tanks should be reconciled with certified charts and automatic tank gauge reports. For inventory control, use consistent measuring procedures. For legal or environmental reporting, follow local rules and approved measurement methods.
Delivery Planning
Before a fuel drop, the available space matters. A driver and manager need a clear safe fill amount. The calculator shows ullage so the next delivery can be planned with less guessing. It also helps compare expected gallons with invoiced gallons after a load is received. Large differences should be reviewed quickly.
Best Practices
Take the reading from the correct gauge point. Keep the stick vertical. Wait for waves to settle after fuel movement. Write down the time, product type, and employee name. Use the same unit settings each day. When a tank has a certified chart, use that chart as the final authority. Review unusual results before daily reporting.
