Piston to wall clearance is the open space between the piston skirt and the cylinder wall. It looks small, yet it controls sealing, noise, friction, and service life. A tight piston can scuff when heat grows the skirt. A loose piston can rock, slap, and wear the bore. Good clearance starts with clean measurements and a clear unit choice.

Measure Before You Decide

Measure the cylinder with a dial bore gauge. Check the bore at the thrust direction and the pin direction. Take readings near the top, center, and bottom. Measure the piston at the maker's skirt gauge point. This point is usually below the oil ring and across the skirt. Do not measure the crown as the final piston size. Pistons are cam ground and tapered by design.

Cold And Hot Thinking

Most machine shops set clearance as a cold value. The cold number must leave room for thermal growth. Aluminum pistons grow faster than iron cylinders. Forged pistons can need more room than cast styles. Racing, boost, nitrous, and high load use can also need extra clearance.
