It creates a reasonable mileage estimate from costs that normally change with driving. Fuel, maintenance, tires, depreciation, and insurance can all contribute to the estimate. The method works best when your expense records cover one clear trip, month, or reporting period.

Start with total vehicle expenses for the period. Remove costs that do not directly rise with miles driven. Tolls, parking, fines, and one-time fees should usually be excluded. Then calculate the estimated operating cost per mile. Divide the remaining mileage-linked expenses by that per-mile cost. The result is an estimated distance.
