Threads Per Inch to Pitch Guide
Thread data can look simple at first. It becomes critical when parts must fit, move, seal, or carry load. Threads per inch, often shortened to TPI, tells how many thread crests appear in one inch of length. Pitch tells the distance from one thread crest to the next. This calculator converts TPI into pitch in inches and millimeters. It also estimates lead, travel, revolutions, and a useful helix angle when a diameter is entered.
Why Pitch Matters
Pitch controls the motion of screws, bolts, lead screws, taps, dies, and threaded inserts. A fine thread has more threads in each inch. It has a smaller pitch. Pitch is not always the same as lead. Lead is the distance a screw advances in one full turn. For a single start thread, lead equals pitch. For a two start thread, lead equals two pitches. For a four start thread, lead equals four pitches. Multi start threads are useful when fast linear travel is needed without using a very coarse thread form.

Accuracy Tips
Measure several threads when checking an unknown screw. Count threads over a full inch when possible. For short parts, count over half an inch and double the result. Common Mistakes
Do not confuse TPI with pitch. A larger TPI means a smaller pitch. Do not confuse pitch with lead on multi start screws. Check the start count before estimating travel. Also check units before comparing values. Millimeter pitch and inch pitch can look similar in decimals, yet they describe different measurement systems. Save the export with the job name, tool number, and revision note for safer repeat work. This reduces rework and makes inspection history easier to follow later.
