Percentages show how much of a whole belongs to a selected part. They use one hundred as the common reference. A whole number percentage calculation can answer many simple questions. Finding a share of a whole
A percentage is a ratio written against one hundred. For example, 25% means 25 parts from every 100 equal parts. To find a percentage of a whole number, multiply the whole number by the percentage. Then divide the product by 100. For example, 15% of 240 is 36. Multiply 240 by 15 to get 3,600. Divide 3,600 by 100 to get 36. This process works for small and large values.
Comparing a part with a total
Sometimes you know a part and a total. You may want to know what percentage the part represents. Divide the part by the whole number. Then multiply the answer by 100. If 45 people choose an option from 180 people, divide 45 by 180. The result is 0.25. Multiply it by 100. The answer is 25%. This is useful for reports, grades, survey summaries, and progress checks.
Working backward from a percentage
Reverse calculations are also useful. You may know that a number represents a certain percentage. You can find the original whole number by dividing the known part by the percentage written as a decimal. For example, if 18 is 12% of a total, change 12% to 0.12. Divide 18 by 0.12. The original total is 150. The percentage cannot be zero for this method.
Changes, rounding, and checks
Percentage increases and decreases use the same core idea. First calculate the percentage change. Then add it to, or subtract it from, the starting whole number. A 20% increase on 80 adds 16. The new value is 96. A 20% decrease on 80 subtracts 16. The new value is 64. Entering a whole number helps keep the starting amount clear.
Rounding can change how a result appears. Keep more decimal places when you need precision. Choose zero decimals when the result must be a whole number. Using percentage results well
