Calculator Inputs

Use the fields below to estimate the final exam score needed for your desired course grade. The page stays single-column, while the form adapts to screen size.

Average across all graded work already completed.
Total course weight already finished.
Weight assigned to the final exam.
Quizzes, projects, labs, or homework still pending.
Use your best estimate for unfinished work.
Choose a manual target or a grade cutoff.
This field is used when target mode is manual.
Used only when letter mode is selected.
Extra credit applied after the final exam score.
Used to convert the needed percentage into points.
Optional planning input to test a likely outcome.
Use a safer target if you want extra cushion.
Important: Completed weight + remaining non-final weight + final exam weight should equal 100%. The calculator checks this before showing results.

Formula Used

Overall course score is the sum of weighted contributions from completed work, remaining non-final work, and the final exam.

Weighted course score = (Current Average × Completed Weight) + (Expected Remaining Average × Remaining Weight) + ((Final Exam Score + Bonus) × Final Weight)

Final exam score needed = [Target Course Score − (Current Average × Completed Weight) − (Expected Remaining Average × Remaining Weight)] ÷ Final Weight − Bonus

Use weights as decimals inside the formula. For example, 30% becomes 0.30. The calculator handles this conversion automatically for you.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your current average for all completed graded work.
  2. Enter the total course weight already completed.
  3. Enter the weight of the final exam.
  4. Add the weight and expected score for any remaining non-final work.
  5. Choose a manual target percentage or a letter-grade threshold.
  6. Enter any bonus points that will be added to the final exam score.
  7. Optionally enter projected final performance to test a likely outcome.
  8. Click the calculate button to see the needed final score, point requirement, status, and graph.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does this calculator actually estimate?

It estimates the final exam score you need to reach a target overall course grade. It also shows whether your goal is already secured, achievable, or unrealistic under the current assumptions.

2) Why do the weights need to total 100%?

A course grade is usually built from all graded parts together. If the completed work, remaining work, and final exam do not total 100%, the required final score would be misleading.

3) Can I use a letter grade instead of a percentage?

Yes. Switch the target mode to letter grade threshold. The calculator then uses the selected cutoff, such as 90 for A- or 83 for B.

4) What happens if the result is above 100%?

If the needed final score is above 100%, your target is not reachable with normal scoring alone. Extra credit, revised assumptions, or a lower target may be necessary.

5) What does bonus on the final mean?

Bonus points represent extra credit added to the final exam score. For example, a raw 88% with a 2% bonus behaves like 90% in the weighted course calculation.

6) Why include projected final performance?

Projected performance helps with planning. You can test a realistic final score and see the overall course grade you would likely earn before the exam happens.

7) Is the point conversion useful?

Yes. Many final exams are graded in points rather than percentages. The calculator converts the required percentage into actual points based on the exam total you enter.

8) Can this replace my school grading policy?

No. It is a planning tool. Always verify your syllabus, grading scale, curve rules, bonus policy, and instructor announcements before making academic decisions.
