Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a widely accepted technique used to estimate body composition, specifically focusing on fat-free mass (FFM) and lean body mass (LBM). When a small, safe electrical alternating current passes through the body, tissues with high water content—such as muscle and blood—conduct electricity easily, offering low electrical resistance. Conversely, adipose tissue (fat) contains very little water and creates higher resistance to the electrical flow.
This calculator implements advanced multivariable regression models incorporating stature, total body weight, age, and electrical parameters like resistance ($R$) and reactance ($Xc$). The standard empirical formula computes fat-free mass based on the impedance index ($Height^2 / Impedance$):
$$FFM = k_1 \left(\frac{Height^2}{Impedance}\right) + k_2(Weight) + k_3(Age) + c$$
Where $k_1$, $k_2$, and $k_3$ are empirically derived population coefficients adjusted for gender and hydration status.
