Determine accurate relay release timing delays. Enhance electronic circuit performance reliably now.
When an electromagnetic relay is disconnected from its power source, the magnetic field collapses, causing the armature to release. In many control systems, engineers place a capacitor across the relay coil to introduce a intentional time delay, bridging short power interruptions or preventing rapid chatter. This advanced calculator computes the exact dropout delay based on core electrical parameters, component configurations, and environmental temperature variations.
The circuit operates as an RC discharge network. The time constant $\tau$ is determined by the total discharge resistance multiplied by the capacitance ($$\tau = R_{discharge} \times C$$). The voltage decay over time follows the exponential discharge formula:
$$V(t) = V_{initial} \times e^{-\frac{t}{\tau}}$$
Rearranging this equation to solve for the exact time $t$ when the coil voltage reaches the dropout threshold yields:
$$t = -\tau \times \ln\left(\frac{V_{dropout}}{V_{initial}}\right)$$
Why add a capacitor across a relay coil? It keeps the relay energized for a brief moment during power sags, avoiding unintended system resets.
How does temperature affect dropout time? Copper resistance increases with temperature, altering the time constant and slightly extending or reducing discharge duration.
