Understanding Electrical Internal Resistance

Internal resistance is an inherent property of voltage sources like batteries and generators that causes a drop in voltage when current flows through the system. Every practical power source possesses some degree of internal impedance due to the physical materials, chemical composition, and construction constraints inherent to its design.

Formula Used

Depending on the operational mode selected, this tool utilizes core electrical relationships derived from Ohm's Law. When measuring open-circuit EMF and closed-circuit terminal voltage alongside total current, the fundamental formulation is applied:

$$r = \frac{E - V}{I}$$

Alternatively, when substituting current using an external load resistance parameter, the equation simplifies via circuit analysis to:

$$r = R \cdot \left(\frac{E - V}{V}\right)$$
