Mode & Controls

Example Inputs:
  • Vin: 12 V
  • R1: 10 kΩ
  • R2: 4.7 kΩ
  • Load: Blank or 100 kΩ

Formula Used

The voltage divider circuit reduces an input voltage into a smaller fraction. The primary formula to determine the output voltage across resistor R2, without considering an external load, is expressed as:

Vout = Vin × [ R2 / (R1 + R2) ]

When an additional parallel load resistor ($R_L$) is connected across R2, the effective resistance of the lower leg ($R_{2,\text{eff}}$) is computed using the parallel resistance formula before finding Vout:

R2,eff = (R2 × RL) / (R2 + RL)

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Input your supply voltage value in the Input Voltage field and select the matching unit.
  2. Enter the resistance values for both upper resistor R1 and lower resistor R2 using appropriate multipliers.
  3. Optionally fill in advanced parameters like parallel load resistance or thermal coefficient values for enhanced accuracy.
  4. Click the Calculate Output button to instantly view precise electrical results above the form.

Understanding Voltage Dividers

Voltage dividers are fundamental circuits extensively utilized in electronic engineering for signal level shifting, biasing active components, and sensor reading adjustments. By dividing voltage proportionally across resistors, engineers can easily scale down higher voltages to match safe microcontroller input thresholds like analog-to-digital converters.

Selecting appropriate resistor values is crucial because lower resistances draw higher current and increase power loss, while overly high resistances can introduce measurement errors due to input impedance loading effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Connecting a load in parallel with R2 decreases the total equivalent resistance of the lower leg, which consequently reduces the output voltage divider ratio.

Choose resistor magnitudes high enough to minimize unnecessary power dissipation, but low enough compared to your load impedance to avoid voltage drop distortion.
