Designing reliable electronic circuits with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) requires a solid understanding of electrical principles, Ohm’s Law, and semiconductor behavior. Unlike traditional incandescent lamps, LEDs are current-driven devices. Exceeding their maximum rated forward current can cause thermal runaway and permanent hardware damage.
The primary calculation relies on Ohm's Law to find the necessary current-limiting resistance. For a series configuration, the formula is expressed as:
$$R = \frac{V_{source} - (V_f \times N)}{I_f}$$
Where $R$ is resistance in ohms, $V_{source}$ is the input voltage, $V_f$ is the LED forward voltage, $N$ is the number of LEDs, and $I_f$ is the forward current in amperes.
