Calculate peak DC capacitor inrush currents easily. Ensure safe circuit designs.
When a DC voltage source is initially applied to an uncharged capacitor, the capacitor acts momentarily as a short circuit. This phenomenon creates an extreme surge of current known as inrush current. Properly calculating and mitigating this surge is crucial for preventing component degradation, nuisance tripping of protective devices, and catastrophic failure of semiconductor switches.
The fundamental peak inrush current ($I_{peak}$) in a DC RC charging network is determined by Ohm's Law taking into account total series resistance:
$$I_{peak} = \frac{V_{DC}}{R_{total}} \times SF$$
Where $R_{total}$ is the sum of the capacitor equivalent series resistance ($R_{ESR}$) and any external damping resistance ($R_{ext}$), adjusted by thermal coefficients, and $SF$ represents the safety factor multiplier.
