Understanding Electrical Wire Sizing and Ampacity

Selecting the correct wire gauge is critical for ensuring electrical safety, system efficiency, and preventing hazardous overheating. Undersized cables experience excessive voltage drops and can trigger electrical fires.

Formula Used

The voltage drop and wire sizing calculations depend on conductor resistance, current load, and circuit length. The fundamental circular mil formula applied is expressed as:

$$CM = \frac{K \times I \times L \times 2}{VD}$$

Where $K$ represents the specific resistivity constant of the chosen conductor material, $I$ is the load current in amperes, $L$ stands for the one-way circuit length in feet, and $VD$ is the allowable voltage drop.
