Understanding Fire Alarm Voltage Drop
A fire alarm circuit must deliver enough voltage to every active device. Horns, strobes, sounders, relays, and control modules may fail or operate weakly when the end voltage is too low. A voltage drop check helps designers compare conductor size, route length, connected current, and device voltage ratings before installation.
Why This Calculation Matters
Notification appliance circuits usually carry their highest current during alarm. The farthest appliance often sees the lowest voltage because current must travel out and back through the conductors. Extra resistance from splices, terminal blocks, heat, and aging can reduce margin. This calculator adds those details so the result is more useful than a simple wire chart.

Start with the panel or power supply output voltage. Then enter the minimum operating voltage printed in the device documentation. Add the one way cable distance to the last powered device. Reading The Result
The result shows total alarm current, circuit resistance, voltage drop, percent drop, and estimated end voltage. It also compares the calculated drop with two limits. One limit comes from the maximum drop percent. The second comes from the minimum device voltage. The stricter value controls the pass or fail decision. A passing result still needs review against local rules, manufacturer data, and project documents.
Good Field Practice
Use actual routed length, not only plan distance. Include vertical risers, bends, and panel offsets. Measure long home runs carefully. Keep voltage drop worksheets with submittals so reviewers can trace assumptions. For staged buildings, run a second check after device counts change. When the result fails, reduce current, shorten the run, split the circuit, use a larger conductor, or use an additional listed power supply.
