Thermal resistance modeling is an essential concept in mechanical, chemical, and electrical thermal engineering. When designing heat transfer systems, such as insulated steam pipes, cryogenic transport lines, or electronics cooling channels, engineers frequently treat heat flow using Ohm's Law analogies. In this framework, temperature difference acts as the thermal voltage potential, heat transfer rate acts as electrical current, and material opposition to heat transfer represents thermal resistance.
Understanding individual resistance components allows engineers to target bottlenecks in thermal insulation systems. For example, adding insulation increases the outer radius logarithmic term, thereby raising overall resistance and lowering heat loss. However, past a certain critical radius, adding insulation can paradoxically increase heat dissipation due to enhanced surface area convection effects.
