Understanding Transformer Exciting Current Tests
The exciting current test (also known as no-load current test) is a crucial diagnostic routine performed on power and distribution transformers. It measures the current drawn by the transformer winding when rated or test voltage is applied to one winding while all other windings are left open-circuited. This current typically comprises a small fraction of the rated full-load current (usually between 0.5% to 5% depending on core design and size).
Formula Used
The full load primary current is evaluated using:
I_fl = (kVA × 1000) / (√3 × V_pri) (for 3-phase systems)
The exciting current percentage is calculated relative to the full load current:
Exciting Current (%) = (I_measured / I_fl) × 100
