Why 12 Volt Voltage Drop Matters
Low voltage systems look simple, but they are sensitive. A small wire loss can dim lights. It can slow motors. It can also make chargers, pumps, radios, and controllers shut down early. This calculator helps you test the full circuit before buying cable.
A 12 volt supply has little room for waste. A one volt loss is more than eight percent. That loss becomes heat inside the cable. Heat wastes battery energy and may shorten equipment life. Correct sizing keeps the load voltage stable.
Common 12 Volt Uses

Long cable runs need special attention. The current travels to the load and back through the return path. For normal two wire circuits, the effective length is twice the one way distance. Chassis returns or single conductor checks can use a one way path.
Choosing Practical Limits
Many installers target three percent drop for sensitive electronics. Lighting and general loads may accept five percent. Heavy motor starts may need larger cable because starting current can be much higher than running current. Always follow local rules and device manuals.
Copper normally has lower resistance than aluminum. Aluminum is lighter, but it needs larger size for similar loss. Temperature also matters. Warm cable has higher resistance. The temperature option adds this correction, so the estimate is closer to real service.
