Understanding Extension Cord Voltage Drop

When electricity flows through an extension cord, resistance within the wire causes a portion of the voltage to be lost as heat. This reduction in voltage reaching your tool or appliance is known as voltage drop. Excessive drop forces motors to draw more current, leading to overheating, reduced performance, and potential permanent motor burnout. Formula Used

The voltage drop for a single-phase circuit is calculated using standard electrical engineering principles:

$$VD = \frac{2 \times L \times R \times I}{1000}$$

Where L is the one-way length in feet, R is the AC resistance per 1000 feet, and I is the load current in amperes. For three-phase systems, the multiplier 2 is replaced by the square root of 3 ($1.732$).
