FAQs
Naismith estimates hiking time by adding one hour for every 600 meters of ascent to the time needed to walk the horizontal distance at a baseline pace.
You can add a descent penalty. Choose none moderate or steep. The calculator adds about 10 minutes per 300 meters for moderate terrain and doubles that for steeper ground.
Select slow average or fast. These map to baseline flat speeds of 4 5 or 6 km per hour. Pick the one that matches your typical pace on easy paths.
Terrain factor multiplies the calculated time. Lower values suit smooth tracks while higher values account for rough ground scree deadfall wet slabs or frequent navigation pauses.
Enter minutes of rest per hour. The tool scales break time with your moving time then applies terrain and pack multipliers to produce a realistic overall schedule.
It is a planning estimate. Real times vary with weather footing navigation group size fitness altitude and motivation. Always carry extra food water and lights and adjust on trail.
Yes. Switch the unit pickers next to distance and elevation fields. The calculator converts to kilometers and meters internally then reports paces in minutes per kilometer.
