The adjusted balance method is one of the most consumer-friendly approaches credit card companies and lenders use to compute periodic finance charges. Unlike alternative frameworks like the previous balance method or average daily balance method, the adjusted balance technique subtracts all payments and credits submitted during the current billing cycle from your starting balance before computing any interest charges.
The fundamental mathematical calculation implemented within this engine follows standard financial accounting principles:
Adjusted Base = Max(0, Previous Balance - Payments & Credits) + Purchases
Interest Charge = Adjusted Base × (Annual Interest Rate / Days in Year) × Billing Cycle Days
Final Balance = Adjusted Base + Interest Charge + Additional Fees + Applicable Taxes
