Healthy garden soil is not just composed of mineral particles; it is a complex, dynamic living matrix made up of solids, water, and gases. Air content, or air-filled porosity, represents the percentage of total soil volume occupied by air after excess water has drained away. Without sufficient air space, plant roots cannot respire properly, beneficial soil microorganisms suffocate, and overall plant vigor declines significantly.
Why Soil Aeration Matters
Plant roots require oxygen to drive cellular respiration, which powers nutrient and water uptake. When soils become waterlogged or excessively compacted, air channels are crushed or filled with stagnant water. Maintaining an ideal air content—typically between 10% and 25% for most garden plants—ensures root systems expand robustly and resist soil-borne diseases.
