Accurately measure soil moisture levels to optimize your garden watering schedule today.
The standard gravimetric soil moisture percentage formula is expressed as:
$$ \text{Moisture Percentage (\%)} = \left( \frac{\text{Fresh Soil Weight} - \text{Dry Soil Weight}}{\text{Dry Soil Weight}} \right) \times 100 $$
When accounting for container tare weights, the net weights of fresh and dry soil are calculated by subtracting the container weight from the gross measured weights prior to applying the equation.
Maintaining accurate hydration levels is vital for successful gardening and crop yield optimization. Different soil compositions such as sandy loam, heavy clay, and organic rich compost hold water differently. Sandy soils drain quickly requiring frequent light irrigation, whereas clay soils retain moisture longer and risk becoming waterlogged. Regular monitoring helps prevent underwatering stress and protects root systems from fungal diseases.
Most common garden vegetables and flowers thrive when soil moisture ranges between 20% and 35% depending on atmospheric conditions.
It is best to check soil moisture weekly during peak growing seasons or whenever weather conditions shift dramatically.
