Mastering Raised Bed Soil Calculation

Creating a thriving raised garden bed starts with accurate soil volume estimation. Whether you are building a simple wooden rectangular frame, a circular metal stock tank, or an intricate L-shaped garden layout, knowing the exact volume of soil prevents multiple trips to the nursery or wasting money on excess bulk material. Our advanced calculator takes into account multiple variable dimensions, standard compaction rates, bag sizes, and custom amendment ratios to give you comprehensive metrics.

Formula Used

The core calculation relies on finding the total volume of your chosen geometric structure. For a rectangular bed, volume is calculated as Length multiplied by Width multiplied by Depth (Height). Since dimensions are often mixed, the script converts feet, inches, and meters into a uniform unit base. Furthermore, we apply a settling coefficient formula:

Total Volume = (Base Geometric Volume × Number of Beds) × (1 + Settling Percentage / 100)

To break down your shopping list, cubic feet are divided by 27 to find total cubic yards. Bag requirements are calculated by dividing total cubic feet by your chosen bag volume capacity, rounding up to ensure you never run short.

How to Use This Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I account for soil settling? Freshly poured soil contains pockets of air. After watering and normal weather exposure, the soil naturally compacts downward, requiring extra volume.

What is the ideal compost ratio? Most gardeners recommend a blend of 30 to 40 percent rich compost combined with quality topsoil and aeration materials like vermiculite or peat moss.

How many bags equal a cubic yard? One standard cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. If using 1.5 cubic foot bags, you will need approximately 18 bags to equal one yard.
