Notes: This tool gives an approximate yardage based on area and effective width. For irregular shapes, consider adding extra allowance.

Example data

Use case Inputs Roll settings Result (approx)
Raised bed weed barrier Rectangle 12 ft × 4 ft, waste 10% Width 3 ft, overlap 2 in, roll length 50 yd ~18.0 yd needed, ~1 roll
Shade cloth over patio planters Rectangle 18 ft × 10 ft, waste 8% Width 10 ft, overlap 0 in, roll length 30 yd ~6.5 yd needed, ~1 roll
Row cover for a hoop bed Rectangle 20 ft × 6 ft, waste 12% Width 6 ft, overlap 3 in, roll length 50 yd ~13.0 yd needed, ~1 roll
Examples are illustrative. Always verify roll specs and installation method.

Formula used

1) Area by shape
  • Rectangle: Area = Length × Width
  • Circle: Area = π × r² (r = radius)
  • Triangle: Area = (Base × Height) ÷ 2
  • Custom: Use provided area directly
2) Adjusted area
Adjusted Area = Area × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)
Allowance accounts for trimming, curves, anchoring, and mistakes.
3) Effective roll width
Effective Width = Roll Width − Overlap
Overlap reduces usable width when joining panels.
4) Linear yardage
Linear Feet = Adjusted Area ÷ Effective Width
Linear Yards = Linear Feet ÷ 3
For very irregular beds, add extra allowance.
5) Rolls needed (optional)
Rolls = ceil(Linear Yards ÷ Roll Length Yards)

How to use this calculator

  1. Select a shape that matches your bed or covered area.
  2. Enter dimensions in your chosen unit, or provide a custom area.
  3. Set roll width and optional seam overlap for panel joins.
  4. Add an allowance percentage to cover trimming and anchors.
  5. Optionally add roll length and prices for roll and cost estimates.
  6. Press Calculate to see yards and roll counts.
  7. Use CSV or PDF export for purchasing and planning.
Practical tip: Measure twice, then round up material for peace of mind.

Coverage planning for garden beds

Covering soil reduces weeds, stabilizes moisture, and protects young plants. This calculator converts your bed geometry into adjusted square feet, then estimates linear yards from roll width. For a 12 ft × 4 ft bed, area is 48 sq ft; with a 10% allowance it becomes 52.8 sq ft. That equals about 5.87 sq yd, or 4.91 sq m. Measure inside edging boards to avoid overbuying.

Choosing roll width and seam overlap

Roll width drives how many panels you need. Wider rolls reduce seams but can be harder to handle in wind. When joining panels, overlap often ranges from 2–4 inches for fabrics and 3–6 inches for films. The tool subtracts overlap from roll width to estimate effective coverage, so a 36-inch roll with a 2-inch overlap behaves like a 34-inch roll.

Allowance and waste benchmarks

Allowance accounts for trimming, pinning, curves, and alignment. Typical starting points are 8–12% for rectangular beds, 12–18% for curves or slopes, and 15–25% for complex edges around trees or irrigation manifolds. If you bury edges in a trench, add perimeter length for the fold. For stapled edges, add extra length for corners and overlaps. Windy sites often justify +2%.

Roll count and purchasing strategy

If you enter roll length, the calculator estimates rolls using ceiling rounding so you do not underbuy. For example, if you need 61 linear yards and your roll is 50 yards, plan for 2 rolls. When comparing suppliers, convert everything to linear yards first, then evaluate cost per yard and cost per square yard at your effective width. If you are far from the supplier, add a safety roll.

Cost control and record keeping

Price per yard fits bulk fabric sold by the cut, while price per roll fits boxed products. Enter either value to see an estimate, then export CSV or PDF for purchasing. Record bed names, season, and installation method so you can reuse proven overlap and allowance settings next time each season.

FAQs

Should I enter bed dimensions or custom area?

Use dimensions when the bed is a clear rectangle, circle, or triangle. Use custom area when the shape is irregular or already measured from a site plan or GIS map.

How do I choose a seam overlap value?

For woven or nonwoven fabrics, 2–4 inches is common to prevent weed gaps. For films, 3–6 inches helps seal seams. Increase overlap for windy sites or when staking points are widely spaced.

Why does overlap change the yardage?

Overlap reduces effective roll width, so more linear length is required to cover the same area. The calculator subtracts overlap from roll width to model this loss before converting to yards.

What waste percentage is reasonable?

Start at 8–12% for straight beds, 12–18% for curves, and 15–25% for complex edges. If you expect frequent trimming around emitters or posts, choose the higher end.

How are rolls needed calculated?

When you provide roll length, rolls are calculated as the ceiling of required linear yards divided by roll length in yards. Ceiling rounding ensures you buy enough even when the final fraction is small.

Can I use this for mulch film or shade cloth?

Yes. Select a similar material type, enter the roll width and length from the product label, then adjust overlap and waste to match your installation method. Export the PDF or CSV to share with suppliers.
