Formula Used

The total volume calculation depends on your selected geometric shape. First, dimensions are converted into standard feet. For rectangular beds, the formula is:

Cubic Feet = Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Depth (ft)

For circular planters, we utilize cylinder volume calculations: π x Radius² x Depth. Compaction and waste percentages are then multiplied to give the final required volume and bag counts.

How to Use This Calculator

Mastering Garden Soil Estimation

Proper soil estimation is critical for any successful landscaping or gardening project. Whether you are installing fresh raised vegetable beds, filling flower borders, or preparing containers, knowing how many cubic feet of soil you need prevents costly over-ordering or frustrating mid-project shortages. Soil settles naturally over time due to watering and gravity, which makes accounting for compaction factors essential when planning amendments like compost, peat moss, and topsoil.

Why Soil Compaction Matters

When purchasing bagged or bulk soil, loose materials contain air pockets. Once irrigated, soil particles shift and compress. Factoring in a ten to fifteen percent compaction rate ensures your garden beds remain level and full throughout the entire growing season.
