Mastering Elevated Bed Soil Planning

Creating a successful elevated garden bed begins with accurate math. Without the right soil volume calculations, you may find yourself short on dirt halfway through filling your frame, or wasting money on excessive bags. This advanced calculator helps gardeners determine cubic requirements effortlessly, factoring in soil compaction rates and bottom filler volumes.

Formula Used

The fundamental volume calculation relies on standard geometric principles adapted for different bed structures. For rectangular beds, the formula is:

Volume = Length $\times$ Width $\times$ Depth

When accounting for soil settling, an adjustment percentage ($S$) is added:

Total Volume = Volume $\times$ (1 + $S$ / 100)

For bulk orders, cubic feet are converted to cubic yards by dividing by 27, ensuring accurate supplier communication.

How to Use This Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to factor in soil settling?

Freshly poured garden soil contains pockets of air. After watering and natural weathering, the soil compresses by 10 to 15 percent. Adding a settling factor prevents unexpected gaps at the top of your bed.

Should I buy bagged soil or bulk soil delivery?

Bagged soil is convenient for smaller beds under three cubic yards. For larger setups, ordering bulk cubic yards delivered via truck is significantly more cost-effective.

Can I use organic wood chips at the bottom?

Yes, layering coarse branches or logs at the base mimics hugelkultur techniques, saving expensive topsoil and improving long-term moisture retention.
