Mastering Fabric Pot Soil Calculations

Gardening in fabric containers offers exceptional root aeration and prevents root circling. However, calculating the exact volume of growing media required can be challenging due to flexible walls and settling factors. This advanced tool removes guesswork by factoring in geometric dimensions, container quantities, and soil compaction rates to give you accurate bag quantities.

Formula Used

To determine the volume of a round fabric container, the standard cylinder volume formula is applied: $V = \pi \times r^2 \times h$. For square and rectangular configurations, the box volume formula $V = l \times w \times h$ is utilized. Cubic measurements are subsequently translated into cubic feet ($cu\ ft$), gallons, and liters using conversion constants ($1\ cu\ ft = 1728\ cubic\ inches$, $1\ cu\ ft = 7.48\ gallons$). A compaction multiplier is then applied to account for post-watering soil compression.

How to Use This Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do fabric pots need more soil over time? Soil naturally settles and compacts after initial waterings and root growth development.

How many gallons are in a cubic foot? There are approximately 7.48 liquid US gallons in a single cubic foot of space.

Should I buy extra soil bags? Yes, purchasing 10% extra ensures you can top off pots after the first heavy watering session.
