Sample scenarios to illustrate typical inputs and outputs.
Scenario Total Length Panel Width Gates (count × width) Waste Panels Needed Posts Needed
Backyard boundary 60 ft 6 ft 1 × 3 ft 5% 10 12
Garden enclosure 40 ft 8 ft 1 × 4 ft 8% 5 7
Mixed access layout 90 ft 6 ft 2 × 3 ft 10% 14 17
Example results assume no extra corner posts. Add extras for corners.
Formula Used

This calculator treats each fence panel and each gate opening as a span. Posts are the boundaries between spans, plus any extra corner or terminal posts you add.

  • Gate total length = gates_count × gate_width
  • Net run length = max(0, total_length − gate_total_length)
  • Panels needed = ceil(net_run_length ÷ panel_width)
  • Total spans = panels_needed + gates_count
  • Posts needed = total_spans + 1 + extra_posts
  • Waste items = ceil(base_items × waste_percent ÷ 100)
  • Items to order = base_items + waste_items
  • Covered length = panels_needed × panel_width + gate_total_length
