Example Data Table
| Scenario | Mode | Inputs | Allowance | Estimated Area |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raised bed liner | Bottom + Sides | 4 ft × 8 ft × 1.5 ft | 2 in overlap, 10% waste | ≈ 47–52 sq ft |
| Rodent barrier panel | Rectangle | 3 ft × 6 ft | 1 in overlap, 8% waste | ≈ 19–20 sq ft |
| Tree guard wrap | Cylinder | Height 2 ft, Diameter 10 in | 2 in seam, 5% waste | ≈ 5–6 sq ft |
| Round cover | Circle | Diameter 30 in | 1 in overlap, 8% waste | ≈ 5–6 sq ft |
Examples are approximate and depend on chosen allowances and roll width.
Formula Used
- Rectangle: Area = (L + 2×overlap) × (W + 2×overlap)
- Circle: Area = π × (R + overlap)² (or R = D/2)
- Raised bed liner: Area = Bottom + Sides = (L×W) + 2×H×(L + W), with allowance
- Cylindrical wrap: Area = Height × (π×D + 2×overlap) (or circumference = 2πR)
- Waste: Final Area = Base Area × (1 + Waste%/100)
- Linear length needed: Length = Final Area ÷ Roll Width
- Rolls needed: Rolls = ceil(Linear Length ÷ Roll Length)
How to Use This Calculator
- Select the calculation mode that matches your project.
- Choose a unit, then enter the needed dimensions.
- Add overlap for seams, folding, or fastening edges.
- Set waste percent to cover trimming and mistakes.
- Enter roll width and roll length for shopping estimates.
- Optionally add a price per square foot to estimate cost.
- Click Calculate, then download CSV or PDF if needed.
Notes for Garden Projects
Common uses
- Raised bed lining to deter burrowing pests.
- Compost bin panels and lids for airflow.
- Chicken coop skirts and run protection.
- Tree trunk guards against rabbits and rodents.
Allowance tips
- Use higher waste when cutting many small panels.
- Add overlap for corners, ties, and staple spacing.
- Measure twice when mixing units like inches and feet.
- If in doubt, round up to the next full roll.
