NRCS soil texture names describe the mineral part of soil. They use sand, silt, and clay percentages. Gardeners use these names to predict drainage, water storage, compaction risk, and amendment needs. A sandy soil drains fast. A clay soil holds water longer. A loam often gives balanced conditions.
Why Texture Matters
