Example Data Table
Sample scenarios for garden workspaces. Your results vary by materials and clutter.
| Space | Size (m) | Key surfaces | Extras (sabins) | Method | RT60 (s) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Potting shed | 6 × 4 × 2.6 | Tile floor, drywall walls, drywall ceiling | Furn: 6 · Plants: 4 · People: 0.5 | Sabine | ≈ 0.85 |
| Greenhouse | 8 × 5 × 3 | Concrete floor, glass ceiling, glass walls | Furn: 3 · Plants: 10 · People: 1.0 | Eyring | ≈ 1.40 |
| Garden studio | 5 × 3.5 × 2.7 | Thick carpet, panels, curtains | Furn: 10 · Plants: 3 · People: 0.5 | Sabine | ≈ 0.45 |
Formula Used
This calculator estimates RT60, the time sound needs to decay by 60 dB. It uses room volume and the total sound absorption of your surfaces.
- Surface areas: Floor = L×W, Ceiling = L×W, Walls = 2×(L×H + W×H)
- Total absorption: A = Σ(area × α) + extras (sabins)
- Sabine: RT60 = K × V / A (K = 0.161 metric, 0.049 imperial)
- Eyring: RT60 = K × V / ( −S × ln(1 − A/S) )
How to Use This Calculator
- Pick the garden space type to load a sensible target range.
- Enter length, width, and height using your chosen units.
- Select floor, wall, and ceiling presets or set custom α values.
- Add extra sabins for rugs, curtains, tools, and plant clusters.
- Press Calculate Echo Time to view the result above.
